Cheers Matthew - I'm currently reading Tarkovsky's "Sculpting In Time", and it's eye-opening, perhaps you've already read it. I've another blog that's less analytical, mostly consisting of photographs and a kind of free association: http://thebigsleepdigressions.tumblr.com/
P.S. Solaris is an incredible film. It's hard for me to settle on one of Tarkovsky's films, though ultimately, I think it has to be Ivan's Childhood; not because it's the most accomplished or evenly spun, as many of the aesthetic principles it was based on Tarkovsky later abandoned, but there is something true and delicate in it that I can't ever escape.
Stalker left an immense impression on me as well. Though I wasn't sure why this passage affected me so much on the 1st viewing, I couldn't get it out of my head. Now I think about it every day:
"May everything come true. May they believe. May they laugh at their passions. For that which they call passion is not really the energy of the soul, but merely friction between the soul and the outer world. But mostly may they have hope and may they become as helpless as children. For weakness is great and strength is worthless."
hey, this is a very cool blog (found it randomly when searching for some illumination about Solaris, my fav Tarkovsky film).
ReplyDelete+ watched Solaris on blu ray, really worth it if you can see it that way.
